Classic Food: Lazzaroni Cookies and the Freeman's Cocktail



We always had these delicious, individually wrapped, Italian amaretto cookies around Christmas as kids. I recently discovered that they taste absolutely perfect with a Freeman's Cocktail, my favorite drink at Freeman's. The original combines rye, lemon juice, pomegranate syrup and orange peel. My DIY take is a little different, but just as tasty:

2 parts Maker's Mark
1 part lemon juice
1 tsp of fruit preserves (I tried the rhubarb/raspberry I picked up at the
Milk Pail in Bridgehampton), melted

Heat a spoonful of preserves in the microwave. Muddle the melted preserves and the lemon juice, add bourbon and shake with ice. Serve in a martini glass and garnish with orange peel or lemon wedge.
